A Tribute to Dr. Peter Dunscombe

It is with great sadness that CARO announces the passing of Dr Peter Dunscombe.  Dr Dunscombe joined the TBCC in October 2001 as the Head of Medical Physics.  He remained in that position until his retirement in June, 2014.  Peter was a teacher and mentor to many of the physicists and radiation therapists that work here and across Canada.   He will be remembered for his dry humor, his vision and his many contributions to medical physics, both in Canada and internationally.  He supervised dozens of graduate students and residents and authored more than one hundred papers.  He was internationally recognized as an expert on patient safety and error reduction through incident learning, working with the AAPM, NCIC, COMP and the IAEA. He had a passion for education: he developed the current medical physics graduate program at the University of Calgary, and served on the executive of the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs and president of the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine.   Peter’s most common response was “Let’s think about it.”  He loved public transport, beer with his colleagues and a good laugh (“By the Law of Averages, we have to be right sometime” is a direct quote from him). Dr. Peter Dunscombe passed away from cancer on March 22, 2018.

The Department of Oncology at the University of Calgary is setting up a memorial scholarship grant fund in memory of Peter (interested members can contact Christie.Farrer@albertahealthservices.ca).
