Position Statement

National/provincial system requirements to improve patient outcomes

Patient outcomes will be improved by ensuring that all patients with cancer are diagnosed quickly and accurately and then managed promptly according to evidence based and regularly updated guidelines.  Treatment should be supervised by an appropriately qualified and experienced professional team who take steps to maintain and demonstrate their competence.  High quality and up to date evidence based guidelines require substantial effort to produce and provinces should collaborate in their production and maintenance.  Maintaining a well trained professional team requires investment in teaching and also requires collaboration among provinces to ensure adequate staffing levels for all of Canada.  A high quality and integrated information system that is capable of monitoring for optimal outcomes and allows for rational resource planning will be essential in the future.
