On behalf of the planning committee, I invite you to attend the 4th Annual Radiation Medicine "Kingbridge" Conference, "Interprofessional Working Practices and Adoption of Innovation", at the Kingbridge Conference centre just north of Toronto, Ontario, Canada on Saturday and Sunday April 21 and 22, 2007. The program, hosted by the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Toronto, will be of particular interest to radiation therapists, radiation therapy nurses, radiation oncologists, physicists and other oncology health professionals. Please circulate this invitation to radiation therapy and nursing staff in your cancer centre.
This year's conference theme is "Interprofessional Working Practices and Adoption of Innovation". We have an exciting program planned that will allow you to interact with your colleagues, keynote speakers, presenters and conference organizers. We have been overwhelmed by the excellent abstracts submitted for oral, workshop and poster presentations.
Our keynote speakers include Dr. Linda Rabeneck, Regional Vice President, Cancer Services, Cancer Care Ontario and a Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Health Policy Management and Evaluation, and Dr. Jack Cunningham, the previous Head of Clinical Physics at Princess Margaret Hospital. Dr. Rabeneck will speak about the importance of multiprofessional collaboration in this era of accelerated technological development and expanding roles and responsibilities of the health care team. Dr. Cunningham has the unique perspective of witnessing the exponential change in technology in radiation therapy since the development of the first Canadian Cobalt teletherapy unit in the 1950's. His historical view and anecdotes will provide a lively session for the audience.
In addition, our keynote speakers will be followed by two stimulating plenary sessions. On Saturday, Dr. Miles Johnston, Senior Scientist and Professor from Sunnybrook Hospital will speak about the importance of the lymphatic system in cancer patients and the problem of lymphedema as a result of cancer treatments. On Sunday, Dr. Mary Preece, Provost and Vice President, Academic at the Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences will be speaking about exciting educational initiatives in interprofessional education.
We have incorporated oral and poster presentations, and several workshops that will elaborate the conference themes of interprofessional working practices and adoption of innovations.
