RADIANT Program

CARO / ONCURA *RADIANT PROGRAM
*Research and Advancement in Diagnostic, Interventional and New Technologies


The Canadian Association of Radiation Oncology and Oncura (previously Nycomed-Amersham Canada Ltd) are pleased to offer Prostate Brachytherapy training opportunities to CARO’s membership through our Radiant Program.  Training and travel awards have been available to CARO members practising in Canada since.  We hope that this program will assist our membership in providing quality brachytherapy treatment in Canadian cancer treatment centres.

Applications are invited from members of the Brachytherapy community for support in the following areas:

CATEGORY 1: TRAINING AWARD

Preceptorships: Up to $2,000 per person and a commemorative plaque will be provided to qualifying individuals to attend a Prostate Brachytherapy Workshop in approved training centres, initially in Seattle, Washington and then Toronto, Ontario.

Criteria:

  1. Individuals applying for this award must be CARO members in good standing.
  2. Individuals applying for this support must provide a “letter of commitment” from their Department Head that indicates funds have been secured for their Prostate Brachytherapy Program.
  3. The Prostate Brachytherapy Program is scheduled to begin within six months of the training program.
  4. Preferred, although not required, is a commitment from the Institution to register two professional members from their Brachytherapy team, representing two of the following specialties; radiation oncology, urology, and medical physics.  Registrants from urology and medical physics must be sponsored by a CARO member in good standing.

This award is made available to registered CARO members by CARO and Oncura

Proctorships: Up to $2,000 will be provided to qualifying Canadian institutions with a prostate brachytherapy program approved for implementation to support a Canadian visiting regional specialist, who is a CARO member in good standing to assist in on-site training. 

Criteria:

  1. Institutions applying for this support must provide a letter of commitment from the Department Head that indicates funds have been secured for their Prostate Brachytherapy Program and a minimum of two implants per month are expected.

This award is made available by CARO and Oncura to registered CARO members.


CATEGORY 2: TRAVEL AWARD

One (1) award of up to $6,000 and a commemorative plaque will be available for a recipient to visit a medical centre in Canada or the United States, to study or gain experience in the use or application of new knowledge or techniques or to further the pursuit of a project relevant to the practice of prostate brachytherapy.

Criteria:

  1. Certified specialists, senior residents or fellows in radiation oncology, who are CARO members in good standing may apply.
  2. In completing your application for this Category please address the following issues: 
    • What methods/techniques do you propose to learn? How do you plan to apply this knowledge?
    • What are the implications for your personal development and your own institution/university department.
  3. How do you propose to measure the value of this experience in 6 to 12 months from completion?
  4. The successful applicant will be required to share their experience at the Canadian Brachytherapy Group Meeting at CARO’s annual scientific meeting.

This award is made available by CARO and Oncura to registered CARO members.


GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSIONS

  1. Applications and attached supporting documentation should be forwarded to the CARO Head Office.
  2. Upon completion of the training or proctorship, receipts are to be forwarded to the CARO office within one month.   A cheque will be subsequently issued by CARO’s Secretary/Treasurer and mailed to the Recipient.

Category 1:  Training Award - Preceptorship

  • Completed Application Form with all signatures
  • Letter of commitment from applicant’s department head indicating that funds have been secured for the applicant’s Institution’s Prostate Brachytherapy Program.
  • Confirmation that the Applicant’s Prostate Brachytherapy Program is scheduled to begin within six months of the training program (can be included in above referenced department head’s letter).

Category 1:  Training Award – Proctorship

  • Completed Proctorship Application Form with all signatures
  • Letter of commitment from applicant’s department head indicating that funds have been secured for the applicant’s Institution’s Prostate Brachytherapy Program, and that a minimum of two implants per month are expected.
  • Confirmation that the Applicant’s Prostate Brachytherapy Program is scheduled to begin within six months of the training program (can be included in above referenced department head’s letter).
  • Visiting Specialist’s qualifications to assist in on-site training.

Category 2 – Travel Award

  • Completed Proctorship Application Form with all signatures
  • Letter of commitment from applicant’s department head indicating that funds have been secured for the applicant’s Institution’s Prostate Brachytherapy Program.
  • Confirmation that the Applicant’s Prostate Brachytherapy Program is scheduled to begin within six months of the training program (can be included in above referenced department head’s letter).
  • Budget for Study /Training Session (complete section on form)
